Are You Ready to Rumble!!!!

Power Bomb your friends for fun!

In our last episode with Durdle Games your favorite design duo decided to not take any time off and dive right into their next game design. And did they succeed? Actually…kinda…yes.

Rowdy Partners has been hitting the table a lot over the past month and the game has been developing at a decent clip. The Durdley Boys have recruited a band of unfortunate souls to regularly play test their new abomination and a game has gone from a half baked mechanical trick-taker to a much more dynamic and exciting battle of trick taking wits.

Now trick-taking an interesting genre of board game in that is long established. People have been playing trick-taking games for over a hundred years, and because of that longevity Rowdy Partners didn’t have to start from scratch. We were able to pick and choose some existing conventions for the core of the game and we’ve been exploring interesting directions to take the game play, in hopes of emulating the raucous nature of a pro-wrestling match. Here are few mechanisms we have been toying with for the game.

Positive and Negative Numbers

The positive numbers are obvious by why negative numbers? Well in this game, the LOWEST number will win the trick. It’s a little odd, but not unheard of. But how would negative numbers impact the rest of the game?

Wrestlers have health pools

Your wrestler has stamina points, and they lose stamina by losing tricks. Lose a trick to a positive number and your stamina will take a hit. Lose to a negative and take no damage. The game really focuses on threading that needle between winning and damage.

Team Up

One way to hit that sweet spot is to Team Work with your partner. Play your card on their card to change it’s value. A 4 that was losing the trick, can now be a 2, win the trick and deal the damage.

Ring Vs. Ropes

Rowdy Partners uses a variable player order using 2 positions. A wrestler is either in the ring or on the ropes. Ring wrestlers lead the trick, but are susceptible to damage. Ropes wrestlers are safe, but have to rely more on their leading partners. Win a trick and you are back in the ring.

This is just the surface of what we have included in the game and in the next few months we will be releasing a rule book and video on the game. It’s shaping up nicely and we hope to see some people in the ring soon.
